Q&A with our Head of Product Development

How did you get into your role?

Did a degree, in product design. Before that I did an A-level in fine art and graphic design, and did a foundation course in art and design, however even before this I was always interested I ceramics, pottery, that sort of thing, I think subconsciously I was always into it. My dad’s friend sourced me a job at his factory in Swansea, where I learnt about working with cardboard, and got to grips with different pieces of software.

What is your favourite thing about your role?

Being able to make things. Both conceptual, and in my workshop being able to play around and adventure with ideas. I wrote my dissertation on paper production in the rainforests, and it has been great for me working with the materials that I do, as I do not feel guilty, and feel that I am part of a positive change/shift towards making eco-friendly materials the norm.

What is your favourite project that you have worked on?
The catapult- it has been great going through the versions just refining and tweaking it, getting it to a point where we are happy to present it to our customers. The difference between the initial concepts and mockup is unbelievable.

What inspires your next idea?
It could be anything, something that I have seen whilst out and about, online, a suggestion from my kids, or other members of my team.

What advice would you have for your younger self/somebody looking to get into your role?

Don’t compare yourself to your peers, it can often feel like you are falling behind, but you probably aren’t. Just focus on yourself and you’ll be fine.
